The 61st annual Retzlaff Reunion was held Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the Saint James Lutheran Parish Hall in Lexington, Texas. Coffee and donuts were available when relatives began gathering about 10:00. A delicious lunch of brisket and sausage, green beans and potatoes, pinto beans, slaw and trimmings, courtesy of the Wayne Retzlaff family, with desserts brought by all, was enjoyed by a crowd of about 65.

Bobby Vance called the business meeting to order at 1:10. He reminded us of the rich heritage of family relationships which this 61st reunion represents. Special thanks were offered to Allen and Kevin Retzlaff for cooking the barbecue and to Karon Shouse for sending the announcements. It was noted that a number of them were returned as undeliverable, and family members were asked to check to make possible corrections.

Some notable facts were: Donald Retzlaff, at 82, was the oldest person present. Kylee Ann, born May 31, 2008, daughter of Adam and Staci Retzlaff and granddaughter of Allen and Brenda Retzlaff, was the youngest. Wally and Carolyn Scrivener Garcia, Nellie and Kenner, of Miles, had traveled the farthest (250 miles). They were also first-time attendees and the only representatives of the Carl Urbantke family.

The death of Helen Stone, spouse of Albert Jesse Stone, of Sulphur, Louisiana, was noted. Weddings included Kevin (son of Wayne) and Samantha Retzlaff, Feb. 22, 2008, Chrystal Retzlaff (granddaughter of Weldon Retzlaff) and Nick Garza, June 13, 2008, Erin Retzlaff (granddaughter of Weldon) and Jarrod Reed, Aug. 24, 2007.

Births noted were Jaylon Reed, March 24, 2008, and Jason Tyler Janak, October 11, 2007, great-grandchildren of Weldon Retzlaff, and Wyatt ?, great-grandson of Gena Griffin, born July ?, 2008.

The next topic of discussion was where to have the reunion next year. Since there were no other volunteers for July 19, 2009, Wayne’s family agreed that they would cook again next year.

Donnie Retzlaff announced that the new edition of the family history charts is available to make changes and corrections and that order forms are on the photo table. He reminded us that the reunion announcement is displayed on the website and said that he will be upgrading the website soon. He invited all to have their pictures made as soon as the business meeting adjourned.

The business meeting adjourned to be followed by picture-taking and conversation.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Beth Gibson
