The 54th annual Retzlaff Reunion was held Sunday, July 15, 2001, at the Danny G. McBeth Recreation Center, 2401-A Columbus Drive in West Zilker Park, Austin, Texas, with Kathy Rogers and Carolyn Tonahill as hostesses. Coffee and donuts were available when relatives began to gather at 10:30, and all were soon greeting each other, looking at the family albums brought by Donald and Norma, Donnie and Elisa Retzlaff, and having pictures taken by Donnie and Elisa.

At noon a catered meal of barbecued brisket and chicken, potato salad, beans and trimmings was served to the 86 present. When everyone had enjoyed the delicious meal and large array of desserts brought by all, a business meeting was convened by Carolyn Tonahill. Mention was made of Donnie Retzlaff's website where the reunion announcement had been posted and inquiries had been received, even from a Retzlaff in Australia (probably not related). Minutes were approved as read by secretary Ruby Vance.

It was noted that the Otto Retzlaff family picture was the largest group. The 86 present included 4 descendants of Adolph Retzlaff, 80 descendants of Bernhard Retzlaff and 2 guests. Angela and Carlos Godby from Washington, D. C. had traveled the farthest, and Angela's mother, Kathy Rogers, the shortest distance. Kathrine Nicole, born May 14, 2001, to Erin and Josh Hendricks, and granddaughter of Donnie Vance, was the youngest in attendance. Oldest was Ruby Vance, 91, who has never missed a reunion. Ruben Retzlaff, 91 in January, oldest living direct descendant, was not able to be present. Geneva Retzlaff Tonahill had just celebrated her 90th birthday with a party on Saturday. Marie Peterson Weiss, 90, announced her move to Lufkin to be near her daughters.

Births announced included Abigail Frances Ball, September 21, 2000, daughter of Laura Veltman and Bob Ball, and Katherine Grace Veltman, May 6, 2001, daughter of Mark and Sandra Veltman, both granddaughters of Emma Lou Peterson Voges. Caroline Elaine Hobbs was born to Kari and Alan Hobbs, October 17, 2000, and Jacob Wayne Mason was born to Debra Hobbs and Marc Mason July 6, 2001. These new additions are grandchildren of Carolyn Vance Hobbs. Judy Vance Dennis announced the marriage of her son Wiley Leonard Dennis, Jr. (Len) to Aimee Jeanette Kainer on April 7, 2001.

Donald Retzlaff announced his continuing work on his autobiography and urged all of us to write our stories.

Donnie Retzlaff keeps the Retzlaff family history up-to-date on his website and all were urged to turn in latest statistics so that Donnie could enter them on his laptop computer. Deepest appreciation is conveyed to Donnie and Elisa and to Donald and Norma, who carry on the work, begun so ably by "Cousin Emma" Retzlaff.

The next topic of discussion was date and place for next year's reunion. Since attendance had been so low on Saturdays the two previous years and was up again on Sunday, it was decided to continue on the 3rd Sunday of July. Vivian Bates invited us all to come to Allen, and her gracious invitation was accepted.

Thanks to Kathy and Carolyn for a most enjoyable and successful reunion.

(Signed) Ruby Vance, Secretary
